The first Community Health Advisors group was formed in Toledo, Ohio, in May of 2013. As an initiative of the SAI Group foundation several organizations came together to fill a void in the Toledo community by offering free education to the public on information and resources available to them to help cope with their health conditions. This group started organizing seminar on focused health topics at regular interval under the banner Healthy Toledo!
Encouraged by the success of the Healthy Toledo! program and learning about the positive contributions they were making, 3 other communities were formed in 2015. There are currently 4 chapters of Community Health Advisors: Toledo, Lima, Bryan (Williams County), and Greater Cleveland, Ohio. The chapters have members from several health care as well as non- health care organizations bearing the common goal to positively impact the health of their local communities. The chapters function as public resources, and organize/ host periodic seminars/ forums free to the public on health related topics especially focusing on aging and chronic diseases/ health conditions.
The objectives of Community Health Advisors are to:
- help individuals understand and manage their health conditions better
- facilitate family members/ friends with more knowledge to enhance their caregiving
- aid in reducing the burden of caregiving
- improve health literacy
